Pick up brimstone on the first back, for more damage against minions to stack souls faster and upgrade it to Fireblossom ASAP.
Choose alternative item depending on opposition, e.g. frost guard against multiple rangers (phys. atk). Crystalline Cuirass against mages (mag. atk).
If against a hero who likes to use magical lifesteal (Countess/Shinbi) take Tainted Bastion instead of Tainted Guard first. Having both is not a bad idea if your team is not building any blight and enemy is using lifesteal/omnivamp.
